In our new edition of this often performed work, many details pertaining to performance-practical matters have been revised. It is known that Bach reused the music of Cantata BWV 213 in his Christmas Oratorio and, as Hans Gruss convincingly explains, paid close attention to the preparation of the performance material in light of the repeated use of the new work. The final version of the cantata is recognizable in the parts of the Christmas Oratorio, states Gruss. The specifics of the later revision can thus be retraced. They have also entailed a number of editorial consequences which cast a new light on the Cantata BWV 213.In our new edition of this often performed work, many details pertaining to performance-practical matters have been revised.

The two-part cantata from Bach's third cycle of cantatas was performed for the first time on 4 August 1726 (the 7th Sunday after Trinity). The large-scale opening chorus for full forces to a text from Psalm 104 shows in its formal diversity Bach at the height of his powers. The second part of the cantata begins with a biblical text (Matthew 6, 31 ff.), not as a choral movement here, but as an extended bass arioso (Vox Christi). A meditative soprano aria with solo oboe forms the high point of the second part. Bach re-used the opening chorus, both the arias and even the bass arioso later in the G minor Mass BWV 235. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3118700.

Bach's cantata Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir of 1731, composed for the inauguration of the Leipzig town council, is one of the cantatas which has an obbligato organ part. In the introductory Sinfonia (an arrangement of the opening movement of the Partita in E for solo violin) and the final aria, the organ has a prominent solo part. The final aria is a transposed repetition of the first aria in the cantata, which frames its central section as a motto Halleluja, Stark und Macht sei dem allerhochsten Namen. However, the high point of the cantata is the magnificent choral movement which precedes the first Halleluja. Bach also re-used this music later in the Gratias and Dona nobis pacem sections of the Mass in B minor. New revised edition. Score available separately - see item CA.3102900.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat BWV 243 was composed in its first form in E flat, right at the beginning of Bach's period in Leipzig, for the Visitation of Mary on 2.7.1723; for a further performance on the 1st day of Christmas, Bach added four extra Christmas movements following a Leipzig tradition. Only in the 1730s did Bach arrange the Magnificat in the well-known version in D; the orchestration was slightly altered, particularly improving the considerable practical performance problems encountered in the E flat major version. Our critical new edition contains the version of the Magnificat in D, based on Bach's autograph score. For Christmas performances the extra movements are available separately, transposed for performance with the D major version of the Magnificat (Carus 31.243/50). Score and part available separately - see item CA.3124300.
